The Pritzker Architecture Prize, which is commonly known as the Nobel Prize for the architects, were won by 3 Japanese, that is, Kenzo Tange (1987), Fumihiko Maki (1993) and Tadao Ando (1995). This is next to United States of 6 , and as many as United Kingdom of 3 winners. What this relative success means? This exposition seeks to explore its background in a historical perspective. It is extremely rare to call an architect with honour of general but for Kunio Maekawa. He was called the "Fighting General in the Modernist Architecture," and people phrase his works started in the 1930s in Japan. Since then in his office, Tange began his glittering career, and after war Maki studied under Tange at Tokyo University. Therefore Maekawa can be seen as the origin of "successful" Japanese modern architecture. I will find out the cause of this in his struggle in wartime Japan.
