Alex

Dear friends,

Less than a fortnight ago terrible events broke out in southern Kyrgyzstan, an area with a sizeable Uzbek minority. In what many sources have described as a well-planned ethnic unrest dozens of people - most of them ethnic Uzbeks - were killed, thousands were wounded and tens of thousands displaced. In the first week close to 100 thousand refugees crossed the Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan border, mostly women, children and elderly, running for their lives.

We don't know whatever was the cause of this violence and whoever stands behind it. What we know is that tens of thousands of innocent people are suffering every day. There are women who have lost their
husbands, sons, and brothers. There are children who have lost both parents. There are elderly people who need special care. There are dozens of wounded people.

These people have left all their belongings behind. In the hell that broke loose, most of them crossed the border empty-handed. Having been placed in refugee camps in three provinces in Uzbekistan, these people need the most basic of things: food, water, clothes, medicines, toilet paper, soap, toothpaste, diapers, etc.

The people of Uzbekistan and some international organisations are trying to help, but that help is far from enough. People are collecting old clothes, buying flour and rice, sending t-shirts and diapers - but for the crowd of a hundred thousand it is still very, very little. What we need is a healthy stream of help, what we have now is a trickle.

We, students at Tsukuba University, have created a relief fund for the Osh refugees. We need other students in Japan to help us. In the name of the innocent refugees, we are calling to everybody who wants to help.

Every yen we collect will make a difference. Just think about it: money spent on a student lunch here (about 1000 yen) will feed a family in a refugee camp. It will buy about 20 kg of flour, 6 kg of sugar, 30-40 flatbreads. It will buy meters of simple cotton cloth from which clothes and bedding may be made. It will buy medicines for the wounded and the elderly.

We will send your donations to Tashkent, where a group of friends who are willing to help will buy the most necessary products suggested by humanitarian organisations and send them to the Ferghana Valley (money is not accepted as aid). We will post regular updates about the progress of our support to our group in Facebook, "Support to Osh Refugees from Students in Japan."

These innocent children and women need your help. Whatever the amount you donate will feed them, make them happier, give them hope for the future. Please don't stand aside.
